Fifteen Minutes, and Then It Was Gone.

The loft in Adamsdown was being insulated, so down came the boxes at last, and there was the Iomega in a tangle of old leads. It gave her fifteen good minutes: it mounted, the folders showed up, and it opened a few of Grandad’s slides he had scanned — then it vanished from the desktop mid-click. After that, whatever she plugged it into gave the same answer, corrupted and unreadable: my laptop at home, the desktop in the office, and a powered hub made no difference at all. The drive carried her family history files, the scanned slides, and the books from the old business.

Why that happens.

‘Corrupted’ is Windows’ catch-all for a read that failed, so it names the symptom and decides nothing. The drive was more forthcoming. It gave up part-way through a read, and stopping at that moment argues for a worn mechanism rather than bits fading from the platters. Long years unpowered are unkind to moving parts: the lubricant creeps away, bearings sit in one place, sliders go dull. Asking a survivor for a single long unbroken read is the roughest possible start.

How it went.

No more power, no more curious looks

No USB port came near it after that. Power came from the bench, and the firmware was read before anything else, because what it says decides the order of work: the grown defect list was long already, and the spares were nearly gone. That meant one measured pass across the whole surface, with no rummaging first to satisfy anyone’s curiosity.

Gentle settings for a drive idle for years

The imager was told to take it gently: the rate kept low, timeouts stretched, and a pause built in between zones so it never had time to warm up. Treated that way the surface gave up most of itself quietly, and nearly all the logged errors traced back to a single head over one narrow band.

Repair the ‘corruption’ on the image, never on the drive

Off the image, the frightening verdict came to almost nothing: bookkeeping the weak head had returned in pieces, or not at all. NTFS keeps duplicates of much of that housekeeping, and those duplicates covered the gaps, so the folders returned with matching names and dates. All that head withheld for good was a handful of scans.

Her research, the business accounts and all but a handful of slides were opened and looked over, one after another. Nine scans came back half-formed; all nine are named in the report, and no number was rounded. The Iomega is not going back up to the loft. Two drives share the archive now, and neither one sits idle.

In brief: An old drive might have one good spin-up left. Use it for a full image, not for a browse through the folders.
