Most people ring to ask one thing: can it be fixed? Honest answer — partly. A dead board is genuinely repairable, and so is firmware that has lost its way. Heads and motors are borrowed parts that hold for one careful read and no longer. Where hard drive repair works, and where it stops.

Electronics: a genuine repairBehind most drives that seem completely dead sits a failed PCB, a shorted TVS diode or a dud USB bridge chip. Each of those is repairable in the ordinary meaning of the word, and that is the good news.
Firmware: mendable, with the toolsCorrupt the translator or one service-area module and a mechanically sound disk will report 0GB, or disappear off the bus entirely. Those structures sit behind purpose-built firmware hardware. There is no download on earth that reaches them.
Mechanics: a single readFitting a donor head stack, freeing a seized spindle, lifting heads that have settled onto a platter — every one of those buys just enough life for one complete copy. The disk does not survive the job it was brought back for.
The PCB swap is overEach drive is calibrated as it leaves the line, and the adaptive values from that calibration sit in a ROM on its own board. Fit somebody else's electronics underneath and the heads hand back noise. The trick has been dead for roughly two decades.

What we usually find first

  • 'Repair' is usually the wrong word — nearly everyone who says it wants the files back, not a working spindle. We answer the need rather than the wording, and tell you plainly which of the two your disk actually needs.
  • The swap nobody mentions — when a laptop returns from a 'repair' running sweetly, the usual explanation is a blank disk in place of yours. Ask where the original went, and ask before you pay.
  • Electrical faults are the cheapest — a surge takes out the board and leaves every platter unmarked, which makes these the quickest jobs on the bench and the least expensive to quote.
  • A head transplant is terminal — it buys reading time and nothing resembling reliability, and anyone who tells you different is arranging your next failure for you.

Put in writing, and stood behind: boards and firmware genuinely mend. Heads and motors are patched to last a single copy and not an hour longer. A scored platter cannot be read past — not here, not by any laboratory, whatever an advert may promise. That has not softened with time, and disks wearing IBM, HGST, Hitachi and Fujitsu labels are still posted in from Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend and the valley towns. So can you actually fix a broken hard drive?

Parts of it, yes. Electronics and firmware come back properly: a rebuilt board, a service area put straight. Anything that moves is different. A donor head stack has one job — hold together for a single read of the platters — then the disk goes in the bin rather than back in the post. You still get the files, on media we buy new.

Repair or recovery — which of the two do I need?

Repair aims at the hardware: hand the customer a working device. Recovery aims at what is stored on it and treats the hardware as expendable. Once a disk has truly failed, only the second is honest. That gap explains the laptop that returns from a shop booting quickly, quietly, and with nothing of yours left on it.

Can I not just swap the circuit board over?

Hardly ever, and never on its own. On the board sits a small ROM holding adaptive values that were measured against your mechanism and no other. Until that chip is lifted off your old board and fitted to the new one, the heads report noise. It is soldering, and it belongs on a bench with the right kit.

Why spend all this when a new disk costs so little?

They are cheap, and that is the flaw in the comparison. Nobody here is selling you a disk. What you pay for is the contents of the one that died, handed over on hardware that works. Spend the same money propping up the failed disk and you own a part you would never dare rely on.
