The fault · knocks and falls

Cardiff dropped hard drive recovery. It fell in a second; the harm is slower.

With the platters turning, the head rides nanometres above the surface at 5,400 or 7,200rpm, with no slack anywhere for a jolt. Powered down, the same drive is far tougher than people assume: the heads sit parked off to one side and the whole assembly will absorb a serious landing. Running or parked shapes almost everything that follows, on every dropped drive that reaches us in Cardiff. Which is why the one thing not to do is plug it in and find out. That first spin-up is often the best read the disk has left, and a pointless test uses it up.

Reading the G ratings.

Off versus runningManufacturers are consistent on this: about 300G is survivable in operation, and roughly 650G for the same notebook drive when it is parked. The fall does not change between those two numbers — only how much the mechanism can take.
Heads meeting the surfaceKnock a drive while the platters turn and the heads come down onto them and skip along. Every contact can score the magnetic coating, and that coating is where your files physically live.
The desktop drive is the weak oneSome 3.5" mechanisms carry a running rating of ~30G, which amounts to little more than a firm bang on the desk beneath them. People tell us they hardly touched it. With a desktop drive, that is very often exactly what happened.
SSDs and sticks that fallThere are no platters and no heads in a WD My Passport SSD or an ordinary USB stick, so it survives the drop that would end a hard disk. When one does stop, the cause is a cracked joint, a snapped connector or a damaged PCB — all repairable.

Nothing gets powered

No current goes near it until an engineer has been over it, because after a drop a bent head meets the platter on the very first rotation. Where it is spun, it is spun once, under observation.

Ruined head stacks are swapped for matched donors, jammed spindles are freed off, heads resting on the platter are eased away, boards and ports mended.

What we usually find first

  • Powered or parked settles the whole thing — one drive, one spec sheet, and two G figures that sit hundreds apart.
  • It gets worse each time — every restart after a fall drags bent heads across the platter once more, and that is why a bench is the only place for the first spin-up.
  • A quiet drive is not a healthy one — a head nudged a little out of line can read fine for a fortnight, then stop dead without warning.
  • A 2.5" drive is designed to be carried; a 3.5" one is not — the first expects a bag, a bus and a train, the second expects a desk it will never be moved from.

The figures on the datasheets: a 2.5" notebook mechanism is typically quoted at around ~300G in operation and roughly ~650G parked, whereas some 3.5" desktop drives are listed as low as ~30G with the platters spinning. Switching off before you move a machine costs you nothing, and no other precaution here helps as much.

A photographer's archive, dropped at the end of a shoot

The drive went down onto concrete as a wedding shoot was packing up, and the first bench test had it clicking. Three years of paid commissions were on there. A donor head stack, two days of imaging, and every gallery came home — that morning's included.

  • Assuming a silent drive is fine — have it looked at

What we get asked, week in, week out.

Is a dropped drive still readable?

Usually, so long as nothing has been tried on it already. The mechanism is not being saved for further service — it has to survive one careful read and no more. With a donor head stack and a slow image, the bulk of the disk generally comes back.

It was running when it went over. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal — far more than the same fall with the power off. A head riding nanometres above a turning platter has nowhere to escape to, and it can score the surface. Leave it off.

Does dropping an SSD do any harm?

Rarely much. There are no moving parts to wreck, so what breaks is the board, a connector snapped off, or a solder joint that has parted. All of that is bench electronics, and the flash chips your files live on are usually untouched.

It ran for another week before dying. Was the fall the cause?

Almost certainly. A head or a bearing knocked a fraction out of line degrades a little more with each spin-up, so the drop settled the outcome and every start since has simply hurried it along.

An unplugged drive keeps whatever it still holds.

A failing drive has only so many starts left in it. Spend none of them. Keep the power off, and the free diagnosis will tell you what is still readable.
