RAW drive recovery in Cardiff. Nothing was wiped; the list that finds your files broke, and can be rebuilt.

Show Windows a volume it cannot read and it offers Format, because Format is the only tool it carries for the job. The disk is plainly there — as it is on the RAW volumes that reach us from across Cardiff. The structures written on it no longer add up. Most of the data lost to corruption goes in the couple of minutes after that box appears, rather than to the corruption behind it.

What actually breaks.

The boot sector failsA handful of sectors at the very start of the volume, holding the numbers Windows needs before it can read a single byte. Small structure, frightening symptoms, and usually mendable.
NTFS and its Master File TableNTFS keeps its own index of every file held on the volume, and of where each one begins. Damage a handful of those records and 0x80070570 appears, though the data they point to reads without trouble.
A lost partition tableA map, held on the disk itself, of where each volume starts and finishes. Lose it and a drive full of data shows up as empty, unallocated space. Put the entries back correctly and the volumes reappear.
CHKDSK: nothing to gainRun CHKDSK against a RAW volume and it will not even begin, so there is no upside to weigh. The downside is real: on a tired drive its repair passes pound the same fragile sectors again and again. Structural work belongs on a copy.

The image comes first

Nothing is repaired until a sector-by-sector copy of the disk exists, with every region that reads poorly noted and left until the end. Broken structures and failing hardware tend to arrive together, so a single image covers both.

The boot sector, the partition table and the MFT are rebuilt inside the image and never on your disk, which means a step that goes wrong can be undone.

When a rebuild is not possible

However badly the MFT has fared, the contents sit in the same clusters as before. Each file is recovered from the image by its signature alone, and as much of the folder structure comes back as the surviving evidence allows.

What we usually find first

  • Unreadable to Windows is not the same as empty — take an image, work on the copy, and more often than not the volume opens again with all of it there.
  • The Format button causes most of the damage that reaches us — one click and a blank file system covers the very records a rebuild would have used.
  • Corruption is often a symptom, not the illness — bad sectors creep outward and chew through metadata, so no job is written off as purely logical until the imaging says as much.
  • NTFS keeps its own spares — the volume carries a mirror copy of the MFT and a second boot sector, and most rebuilds are assembled from those.

Every repair tool shares one habit: CHKDSK, First Aid inside Disk Utility, whatever free RAW fixer a forum recommends — each of them writes to the same disk it is supposed to be saving. If the hardware below is healthy, that costs you nothing. If it is not, a job that would have come back whole comes back in fragments. The cost of caution is a day's wait for an image.

A 4TB archive unplugged mid-write, and Windows said RAW

A write was still going when the cable came out of the socket. Next morning Windows offered one thing: a prompt to format the disk. So the whole 4TB was imaged first, and only then were the boot sector and the broken MFT mirror mended — on the copy, never on the original. Fifteen years of client jobs went home with the folder tree intact.

  • Think back: was there a power cut, or a cable pulled out?
  • Say so if CHKDSK has already been run

  • Running CHKDSK /f or /r on a drive you already doubt
  • Pointing some free RAW repair tool at the original disk
  • Browsing the disk to see what is still there

What we get asked, week in, week out.

Windows will not let go of the format prompt. What if I accept?

Turn it down. A format lays down a new and empty file system where the damaged one was, right on the records that still carry your folder names and dates. Those records are what a rebuild is made from.

Why has it come up as RAW?

Because the structures that describe the volume no longer make sense to it. The damage usually sits in the partition table, the boot sector or the MFT. Your actual files are underneath all that, untouched.

Is CHKDSK worth running?

On a RAW volume it refuses to run at all, so there is nothing to gain from it. Against that, a drive already on its way out gives up a little more with every pass. Repairs belong on an image, not on the disk itself.

I pulled it out without ejecting and now it is RAW. Is that on me?

Quite likely, and you are far from the first. Interrupt a write by pulling the cable and the index is left half-updated, pointing at files that are themselves complete.

An unplugged drive keeps whatever it still holds.

A failing drive has only so many starts left in it. Spend none of them. Keep the power off, and the free diagnosis will tell you what is still readable.
