I Left DMDE Running Overnight and Woke to Grinding.

He thought the scan would be the rescue. On that Expansion sat twenty years of a mobile DJ's career — every set I have played and every mix I made myself — but Disk Management was now calling the volume unallocated, with a button offering to initialise it. He turned that down, found advice on a forum, and started DMDE just before I turned in. The log by morning was thousands of errors, one after another, and under it a noise the drive had never made: grinding, loud enough to hear from the landing. His message ended I left the power on far too long.

Why that happens.

That word makes people reach for a scanner, and there lies the danger. A disk that can no longer read its own partition table is usually a disk that has stopped reading reliably, and worn heads sit high on the list of reasons why. A full-surface scan answers that by flying those same tired heads over every sector on the drive, hour after hour, with no rest at all. Few failing heads survive the trip. Somewhere in the small hours the weakest of the four lost the film of air holding it up and touched the platter it must never touch. That is the grinding they heard through a wall. Everything after that scraped away more coating and gave back nothing.

Measure the damage before quoting a figure

By the time the cover came off the head stack was scrap, and there was scoring on both platters — light in most places, much worse where the scan had dwelt longest. The job was saved by when he pulled the plug. Another night of that instead of a breakfast-time stop and there would be nothing left to write about.

New heads first, and no price until we have mapped it

A donor stack of the right model let the disk read again, and the survey afterwards showed plainly which regions still answered. Wide areas came up fast and without complaint. Over the scored bands the signal thinned and then went altogether. No figure was put to him before that map existed.

Take the healthy areas first, then work into the scarring

Recovery ran in long sweeps, the actuator shifting as little as the work permitted, because each seek over a scored surface can carry loose debris into areas that are still sound. The clean areas went over first, whole, onto fresh media. The banded stretches came afterwards, in short slow passes, giving up whatever they were willing to give.

Signing it off.

Nearly all of it went home in the folder layout he had built himself. What was missing sat inside the banded ground, and the report named each one: a run of released tracks that can be bought over, and four recordings of his own that exist nowhere else now. We put that down plainly, with no gloss on our side.

In brief: A full scan is a tool for hardware that still works. Aimed at heads already failing, it costs you the platters. If a drive makes a sound you have never heard from it, switch it off rather than try again.
