The Disk Was Never the Problem.
In 2012 a surveyor in Chepstow wound up his practice and put the whole scanned client archive onto an Iomega that was then about a year old. It still takes power. The light's on and you can hear it going round
, he said. But no machine will list it as a drive. I took it to a repair shop and they got nowhere.
He drove back from that counter having settled on the grimmest answer going: the disc inside it has shattered

Why that happens.
One plastic case, two separate products, and the two do not wear out together. At the back is a plain SATA disk, no different from one in a desktop. Ahead of that is a small bridge board turning SATA into USB, made down to a price, with no cooling beyond the air that gets past it. When a unit takes power, hums away and still shows up nowhere, suspicion runs in this order: bridge board, then firmware, then the mechanism itself. Broken platters belong at the outer edge of the least likely one. A diagnosis exists to test the frightening answer rather than nod along with it.

How it went.
Take the case apart and ask the disk
Four screws later the Seagate Barracuda was out and sitting on a bench SATA port. His theory did not last the next half-minute: the disk spun up, gave its proper model string and its full size, and answered vendor commands without a pause. What he had been hearing was an ordinary drive resonating through thin plastic.
Read the logs before ringing anyone
A drive can look perfectly well and still be failing quietly, so nobody phoned him until the grown defect list and the reallocated-sector count had been read off. Both were about where you would expect for a lightly used drive of that vintage. Sampled reads from each zone were clean the first time round, with nothing retried.
Image it at full speed, then name the culprit
The image ran clean from the first sector to the last, at the speed the drive is rated for. Nothing had to be coaxed along, no retries, no fresh defects. One part was left to answer for. Age had finished off the bridge board in the case, while the disk it was there to serve carried on without complaint.

Scans from every year of the practice opened, and none of them was missing anything. What we recovered was returned on fresh media. The old Seagate was rehoused in a newer enclosure and given an easier life as the second copy. Nothing more was said about shattered platters.
