One Tick, a Long Pause, Then One More.
The rucksack was open, and the drive went out onto a kerb in Splott. Rubber round a case invites you to shrug. Twelve years of site photographs and drawings sat on it. Then it won't mount on either of my Macs
, and up against his ear came a tick, several seconds of quiet, then a second tick — faint enough to be nothing at all.

Why that happens.
How loud it is describes the casing, not the injury. A 2.5in platter shifts less air than a 3.5in one, a light chassis carries less sound, and the rubber on a Rugged is fitted to soak up knocks and noise. None of that reaches what is written on the platters. Take the shell off and the barely-there tick and the thud from a big desktop drive are the same event: heads searching for a servo mark, failing, retreating, setting off again. Each search drags them across the surface holding your files.

How it went.
A quiet tick gets the same handling
Power stayed off until it was open on the bench under a lamp. What we found was the usual damage, only smaller: contact marks on the sliders at their parking point, and platters that had escaped almost unmarked. Two attempts, then he stopped — and how little there was to photograph is that decision showing.
Nothing is read until the heads are right
The donor was chosen to match on family and on production window. Once its stack was fitted, every head was put through a test of its own. All of them read data, though one came back measurably weaker, so that one went last and the pass opened with the strongest.
Put the volume back the way HFS+ expects
An HFS+ volume keeps its index in one catalogue file. Take that off the image intact and the archive comes back as an archive; lose it and you hand over a pile. His jobs returned with their names, sorted by year, dates as recorded — not ten thousand numbered files to open one at a time.
Signing it off.
Nothing was missing. The rebuilt volume was mounted, and we opened a job from its first year and another from its last — photographs in one, drawings in the other. It came back whole for one reason: two attempts, not twenty.
