It Turned for Ten Minutes, So She Pulled the Lead.
One morning the Backup Plus gave her ten minutes of the coloured wheel just spinning

Why that happens.
A Mac refuses to show a volume anywhere until the catalogue has been read, and here the catalogue lay directly over a patch of failing surface. So the wait was the disk, not the computer: the same sectors asked for, refused, and asked for again, with the Finder stuck at the back of that queue. Then comes the natural response. Unplug, plug back in, try once more — and every one of those attempts sends the heads over the weakest ground on the platter again. What reads slowly this month can stop reading altogether by the next.

How it went.
Booked in, and never plugged into a computer
The Seagate went straight onto bench equipment and stayed there; nothing with an operating system on it came near the drive again. Service-level access showed the fault at once — a spreading band of dead sectors sitting square across the region HFS+ uses for its catalogue. That is the ten-minute wait, and the morning it went quiet as well.
The metadata came off first, and slowly
Order counted for more than speed here. The catalogue and metadata were copied ahead of anything else, slowly, with retries kept short, since those few areas are what put a pupil’s name and a date back on every recording. Bulk audio came afterwards. And one thing worth stating: pulling the lead out had broken nothing.
The rebuild was done on the image only
None of the repair work touched the Seagate; it all ran against the completed image. Skip that and eleven years arrive as unnamed fragments instead of folders marked with a pupil and a year. The names, the dates and the folder tree all came back with the audio.
Signing it off.
She got back the folder tree she built herself, and would only sign off after playing lessons from three years either side. Nine recordings, all from the worst stretch of that band, came back truncated. All nine are listed in the report.
