The Machine Was Dead. The Disk Never Knew.
An hour after the 2012 MacBook Pro stopped responding, the ten screws in its base were coming out on a kitchen table in Cathays: nothing showing at the magnetic connector, no start-up chime, and two different chargers and it will not wake for either
. Its owner is training to be a teacher and had a placement portfolio due that month, so he had no appetite for a repair quote. A teardown guide got him down to the Toshiba 500GB before midnight, on the reasoning that my work is on the drive, not on the laptop

Why that happens.
Two chargers, no flicker from either: that points at the power path, and the drive is not on it. Storage hangs off the supply rather than sitting in the middle of it, so a failed charging circuit starves a disk; it does not harm one. Which left a single real unknown, the thirteen years of near-daily running. Whether a disk that old can still be trusted is measurable, so it was measured before he was promised anything.

How it went.
Thirteen years earns no benefit of the doubt
It never went near a USB caddy. The drive was addressed at firmware level, which is where a disk finally owns up: the grown defect list, the reallocation counters, the SMART log, then test reads stepped inward from the outermost tracks. Nothing interesting came back, and nothing interesting is the good result — a small number of remapped sectors, no drift in the timings, a mechanism in better shape than its owner had feared.
Healthy media gets the blocker too
Sound media is treated the same way as failing media. On a drive in this condition the blocker costs no time worth measuring, and it closes off any later argument: the disk went out exactly as it came in, with a log that says so.
The rest happens on the clone
UFS Explorer opened the volume straight from the image: filenames, the folder tree, the dates, all of it as he remembered. The MacBook itself was never opened again; the job did not call for it.
Signing it off.
The portfolio and the placement evidence were back with him a fortnight before the deadline. Whether that charging circuit is worth repairing is somebody else's trade. The Toshiba, measured and with its condition written down, now has the easier job of holding a second copy.
