Two Clicks, and the Heads Had Worn Out.
A family in Barry spent close to a year blaming a faulty USB port. On the Toshiba were ten years of photographs of their two children, and the only symptom was that it kept getting a bit slower month after month

Why that happens.
Tucked into a reserved band on the platters sit the adaptive and calibration tables, and a drive has to read them before it can offer itself to any computer. Heads worn as thin as these could not lift that data. What follows is deliberate rather than accidental: the firmware gives itself two goes, recalibrates in between, then powers down instead of working from numbers it has no confidence in. You hear those two goes as the clicks. The year of slowing beforehand was the identical wear piling up without a sound, and the message on screen was only Windows repeating aloud what the disk had been signalling for months.

How it went.
The noise was a symptom, not a nuisance
Always two clicks, never three, then power down — that pattern belongs to the power-on read rather than to normal use, which points the first failure at the reserved tracks. Magnification backed it up. Nothing chipped, no marks from an impact, just even wear across all the sliders after an enormous number of flying hours.
Replace the heads first
With a stack from the same production batch in place, the disk completed its power-on read, stayed up and reported its own identity. Mapping followed straight away rather than being left for later: a decline that gradual almost never wears every surface at one rate, and the map is what tells you where the reading is still to be had.
Image it straight away, best heads first
A disk worn that far will not grant a second sitting, so the imaging began with the repair still fresh on the bench. The sound heads ran at full speed first, the doubtful bands were held over for slow passes once the rest had been copied, and because the reserved area could be read again, almost everything came off the platters without argument.

The image finished complete, and everything was pulled from that copy rather than from the disk itself, the folders checked year by year before the job was closed. The Toshiba went for scrap: a drive that has worn its own heads down has nothing left to offer anybody.
