We Knew the Fault Before the Parcel Came.

Why that happens.
The IT firm had it right, and right is as far as anyone gets without a clean bench. A head rides over its disc at a gap fixed in the factory and counted in nanometres. Bend the arm that carries it and nothing on a bench will straighten it again: either a matched stack from the same production family goes in, or that is the end of it. That part we can predict. The surfaces we cannot. Knock one over during a read and a head may come down on the coating, and damage like that is something you work round rather than read through. Nobody knows which of the two they have until the lid is off, so any fixed price quoted before then is a number picked out of the air.

How it went.
Decide nothing until the discs are seen
Magnified, the firm's verdict stood up: one arm sitting higher than its neighbours, and an untrue stack reads nothing at all. The discs were the bigger question. A head had come down somewhere and left a pale ring around the second platter — faint, not the deep scoring that finishes a job then and there. The service log told the rest of the story. The drive had been retiring sectors quietly for a long time before he ever paid for it.
Finding a stack that would fit a chassis this tight
A slim portable Seagate has next to no room in it, and a drive packed that tight is particular about what will work inside it. The donor had to match on family and on firmware generation as well; the capacity printed on the label rules a few out and proves nothing. We had one on the shelf. Fitted under laminar flow, the disc came up to speed cleanly and stayed there, and each head was graded on its own merits before any bulk reading began.
Good surfaces first, the marked ring last
While the new stack was at its freshest, the sound surfaces were taken in one pass, beginning to end. The marked band waited its turn and got gentle treatment: short runs, retries kept low, a rest in between. It handed over a fair share of what it held, then went quiet, and we stopped pushing.
Signing it off.
Nearly all of it went home on fresh media: job photographs going back years, checked over and sorted by address. The report listed the gaps too. A single folder from his first trading summer sat under the marked ring and stayed there, and that was the job he wanted the pictures for — an argument with a customer over a warranty. Weighed against a used drive pulled off a desk mid-read with nothing copied anywhere else, he came out of it well.
