Fifteen Years On Board, and Not a Sound.
It let go over half term, at her house in Cwmbran, with coursework moderation still ahead of her. Fifteen years of teaching design and technology lived on one pocket drive: all my schemes of work, the CAD files, footage of every build my classes have done

Why that happens.
A dark drive has three possible culprits, and from the outside they are indistinguishable. There is the small translator board that sits between the USB socket and the disk. There is the firmware, which lives on the platters themselves. And there is the mechanism, spinning or not spinning inside. Each carries a different price. Once the lead and the sockets are out of the picture, as they were here, the only way to separate the three is to open the shell and put the bare disk on a bench. The cheapest of them is also the commonest, which is why it is where you start.

How it went.
Open the case and go straight to SATA
Stripped of its shell and wired to a SATA port, the disk replied in well under a minute. Spindle up to speed, model string correct, every service command answered. The silence, then, had belonged to the bridge board alone. That board is what lets a bare SATA disk talk USB in the first place, so when it dies it takes the light, the handshake and every outward sign with it.

With the failed board set aside, the Elements read like a disk in perfect health. Full speed throughout, no read errors logged at all, and the factory defect list exactly where the drive expected it. A bridge fault should look like that on the bench, and this one did, from first sector to last.
Hand it back on a disk that works
Written out to a new disk, the tree came over untouched: Year 9 in the place it has always occupied inside Schemes of Work, and the moderation folders parked where she always looks for them, nothing renamed and nothing poured into a single heap. All that changed was the shape of the case on her desk.

Fifteen years travelled home intact, in the order she had put it in, checked over before the box was taped up. Not one byte of her work had ever passed through the component that gave out — and you can buy another of those for a few pounds.
