Lit Up, and Completely Still.

One knock cost three winters' work. A man in Rhiwbina had been feeding his cine reels through one spool at a time, then working down the slide boxes in batches, with all of it landing on a single drive — until it tipped onto its side with a copy running. Now: the light stays on, there is not a sound out of it, no vibration under a fingertip, and neither machine will list it.

Why that happens.

The LED sits on the power rail, and that is all it can tell you. Current arriving at the enclosure says nothing about whether the disc inside is turning. With no spin-up to listen for, three suspects remain under the lid: a head stack that has come down onto the recorded surfaces and taken hold; a spindle bearing that has seized; or a board that never sends the motor its start command. Feed it from a bench supply, watch the current, and the three sort themselves out in a few minutes, because each has a signature of its own. He had been planning to try another cable. That would have changed nothing.

How it went.

Measure it before you guess

Taken off USB and fed from a metered supply, the drive revealed what a laptop never can: a clean rush of current as the motor tried to start, then a hard stall against whatever was holding it, and the same picture twice over. A failed board would have sat flat and low throughout. This was neither, and that one trace settled where the fault was.

Lift the heads off the platters

Once open under clean air, the mechanism said what the meter had said. The knock had come mid-write, so nothing had ever ordered the heads home to the ramp. They had settled on the platters and were holding the spindle exactly where it had stopped. Each head was released separately, and the strip of platter under it went beneath the stereo microscope, because a head parked long enough will wear its way into the data.

One spin-up, then take the lot

Once released, the motor started first time and the drive identified itself correctly. The whole disc then came off in a single unbroken run: nothing was opened along the way, and there was no stopping to browse. A mechanism that has seized once could seize again at any moment.

Signing it off.

Not a mark on the surfaces, which is the usual ending when nobody keeps retrying — and all of it returned: each reel he had transferred, each slide he had scanned, verified onto new media. The S3 was binned. There are three copies of the films these days, and his sister keeps one.

In brief: A drive that lights up but will not spin has a mechanical fault. No amount of software will get a seized motor moving.
