It Tries Five Times, Then Stops.
The last copy never finished. A house move out to Penarth tugged the lead loose part-way through, and the Passport then sat in a drawer all winter holding twelve years of camcorder tapes and her mother’s albums, scanned a page at a time. She tried it again in March. The laptop still goes ding when I plug it in

Why that happens.
There are two machines in that little case. One is the disk. The other is a small board that turns the disk into something a USB port can talk to, and it has its own processor, its own memory and its own view of whether it is well. That board was in fine health here, which is why the laptop chimes, why something shows up in the device list, and why Windows will cheerfully offer to remove hardware whose contents it has never seen. Behind it, the disk never got going. Firmware allows the motor a set number of goes at bringing the platters up to speed and stops there, rather than keep pushing current into a coil that is achieving nothing. Count the hums and you are counting an allowance being spent. It is a budget, not a fault code.

One go on the bench, current capped at the supply, told us most of it. Five rises in draw as the motor pushed at whatever was holding it. Nothing anywhere to suggest the platters had come up to speed. Then the firmware called a halt. A spindle only behaves that way when it is up against something solid, and her own attempts at home, it turned out, had done it no further harm.
Inside, and get the heads off the surface
The lid came off and the story was plain. When the cable went during that last copy, the heads never reached their parking ramp. They came down on the platter itself, and a winter in a cold drawer bonded them there. Each one was eased free by hand. Both contact marks went under the microscope before the motor saw any power at all.
One full pass, made through its own board
On a My Passport the encryption sits on the USB board rather than on the disk, so the board stayed in the chain with the imaging hardware behind it — the route WD built for this data to begin with. The copy went end to end, first sector through to last, with nothing skipped. A head stack that has once been stuck to a platter does not get a second cold start.

It was all there — the transferred tapes, every scanned album page, the lot — and it went back on fresh media with one piece of advice attached. A copy that lives in the same house as the original is hardly a copy at all. The Passport itself is done with, and goes no further.
