Why that happens.
Two facts settled most of it before the parcel arrived: the disk was turning, and no machine in the office could see it. A disk on its way out usually gives notice. It slows, or takes up a note you have not heard from it before, or drops out and comes back for a fortnight before going for good. This one sounded no different from any other day, and then it was simply not there. That moves the fault off the mechanism and onto the electronics that present the disk to a computer, which in a pocket enclosure means the bridge board nine times out of ten. With a year-end and two VAT returns inside the same fortnight, the gap between those answers was an awkward week or a practice with no records. It went to the top of the pile.

How it went.
Out of its case the same day, because the diary allowed nothing else
The parcel came open and inside the hour the bare disk was sitting on the bench. It answered everything correctly: the motor held its speed, the firmware replied at once, and test reads came back clean off every head. With the mechanism cleared, the fault belonged to the bridge board by elimination, and the copy was running before lunch.
Bin the board and the key goes with it
The encryption key on these units sits on the USB board and nowhere else, which is why a dead board cannot just be swapped out and binned. Only the USB half of this one had gone. Powered straight from the bench, it still replied, so the board was kept in the chain for the copy and the volume mounted as though nothing was wrong.
Verify it in the order the deadlines fell
She emailed over her deadlines, and the checking ran in that exact order. The two VAT sets due soonest were read a ledger at a time and returned first; everything else was verified after that. A filing deadline does not want the whole drive back, only the right folders, in time.

Every ledger was accounted for, and both returns were filed with a day still in hand. One thing changed afterwards: the working client files now copy onto a second drive every evening, before the lid comes down.
