A Beep the Socket Could Not Have Made.
The wedge of folded card under the cable was two years old by then. That was the drill with this Backup Plus — shove it in, then lift it a touch to the left
— and since it worked, nobody argued with it. Then the drive found a new sound. Light on, one flat note that would not stop, and nothing in the Ogmore Vale workshop would see it. A lad down the road offered to put a fresh socket on. He rang us first.

Why that happens.
Here is the trap. When one thing has gone wrong in the same spot for years, that is where everybody looks. A worn socket damages the conversation: copies that stop half done, a drive that disappears and turns up again, files that land with holes in them. What a socket cannot do is reach in and hold the motor. Poor contact removes the signal; it does not drop an obstacle into the works. An unbroken note that runs for as long as the power does means the spindle is shoving at something solid, and in a pocket drive that is nearly always the head stack, flat on the discs and holding on. The fault had moved out of the plug and in under the lid, and a fresh socket would have repaired the only part of it that no longer mattered.

How it went.
Keeping the two faults apart
A current-limited supply answered it in under two minutes. The draw climbed, held climbing, the motor leaning into a load that would not shift, and then the drive shut down and went quiet. A stall, no argument. What he had told us about the plug was accurate and had no bearing on any of this; the enclosure had to come apart regardless, which took the socket out of the job for good.
Stack out, enclosure out of the story
The lid came off in clean air, and the heads sat exactly where the noise said they would: flat on the discs, nowhere near the ramp that should have parked them. Off came the stack, onto the microscope, and the ring of surface underneath it was unmarked. From there the drive went straight onto an ordinary SATA port. Two years of propping up a cable counted for nothing at that point, and no iron ever went near the socket.
One pass, over a connection that held
Turning freely again, the drive gave up everything in a single overnight pass, first sector to last. Nothing dropped off the bus, nothing reset, and the stop-start behaviour he had lived with for years never showed up once. It was very likely the cleanest run the drive had ever done, and it was certainly its last.

Ten years of the workshop came back and all of it was checked: the job photographs taken as the work went along, the scanned handbooks, the invoices for parts. It lives in two places now — one copy by the bench, one at his brother's house. The folded card has gone in the bin.
