A Fall Mid-Copy, and the Socket Went With It.

Why that happens.
One question decides it: was the drive working when it fell? Powered down, the heads rest on a ramp beyond the edge of the platter, clear of anything recorded, and a fall from desk height often costs nothing at all. During a copy there is no ramp in the story. The heads are out over the surface at flying height, the arm is moving, and the whole event is over long before firmware could get a retract instruction out. Two identical falls can carry two very different bills, and this one landed on the wrong side of the question.

How it went.
Look at what the fall left before anything turns
Under clean air the stack told the usual story of a mid-flight impact: the harm is never shared out evenly. Two sliders had plainly been knocked about; the rest looked almost untouched. A single narrow band of scuffing followed the arc the arm had been dragged along the surface — genuine damage, but shallow, and nothing like the deep ring that ends a case as soon as it is opened.
Fresh heads, a surface map, then read to a plan
A donor stack was matched and fitted, then the platters were surveyed properly. The running order chose itself after that: the healthy areas were lifted quickly while the new heads were at their best, and the scuffed band was held back to the end, to be crossed slowly with resets ready.
The scuffed band is damage that has happened
That band — whatever lay beneath the sliders as the drive hit the floor — went last and went slowly, with the retry budget wound right open. Most of it gave itself up. Windows never saw the drive at any stage: the imager asked each sector once and moved on rather than knocking twice.

Almost the entire archive went home. The cost was a few interviews lying inside the scuffed band, and the report names each one. The half-finished folder — the copy the laptop never got to the end of — came out of the image whole, hours after the drive itself had been switched off.
