The Adapter Had Been Killing It for Six Weeks.

Six weeks in, the Iomega would still only wake if the barrel plug got pushed over to the left a little — a habit its owner had long since stopped noticing. He sells by mail order, on his own, out of a back room in Grangetown, and every order he has ever taken is on that drive. On the Monday it was cold, no light, not a sound out of it. A spare lead out of the drawer changed nothing. He turned up with the drive and the adapter in one bag and the same question he had asked on the phone: has that adapter shorted my board out?

Why that happens.

It had. Two things were wrong at once, and both of them electrical. A plug that will only make contact one way round arcs against that contact whenever it shifts. Meanwhile an adapter running out of life delivers dips and overshoots in place of a steady twelve volts. Every bit of that reaches the board on the drive before it reaches anything else, and stopping there is the whole point of the design. Its protection diode holds off what it can and then fails short, dragging the rail to earth. The board dies on the doorstep, and what sits behind it is never part of the story.

The adapter gets tested as well

Both went under load. Ask the adapter for current and its output wandered and overshot, exactly as its owner had suspected. On the drive, the twelve-volt rail was shorted hard to earth, and beside it sat the small hard-edged burn mark a spike leaves and age does not.

Fresh components, the drive's own ROM

The burnt components came off and new ones replaced them, while the original ROM never moved. That chip holds calibration figures written for this one mechanism, and without them the electronics cannot make sense of anything the heads send back.

Steady power first, then a single pass

Given clean, regulated power it came up as though the last six weeks had not occurred, read out its defect tables first time, and went from end to end of the disk with no slow patches at all. Electrical faults usually run this way: all of the damage stops in the electronics.

Signing it off.

Everything came back. He ran his own test on it — name a year, pull up every order from that year, count them — and the totals matched all the way back. The adapter went in the bin, and he got his answer in writing.

In brief: Stop nursing a connector that only works when you hold it at an angle. The adapter is on its way out, and it takes the drive with it.
