Newtown is the largest town in Powys and in mid Wales — 11,362 people at the 2021 Census — set in the River Severn valley a few miles from the English border. Its industrial story is outsized for its size. Pryce-Jones ran what is described as the world's first mail-order business from the Royal Welsh Warehouse here, sending Welsh flannel out by rail and post, and Nidec Control Techniques, founded in the town in 1973, still makes electric-motor controls and keeps its worldwide research centre on the Y Gro site. The work sits on disks. Yes — treat it as urgent. A box running with one disk down keeps handing back files, which is why it sits ignored until the next disk goes and everything stops at once. Leave the rebuild alone. Power it off, label the failed disk and the rest with their bay numbers, and send the lot bare.
Our backup runs to the cloud overnight. Is that not a safe second copy?
Perhaps not. Fibre is arriving in the town, but much of the country around it is served by stretched copper or a rooftop dish, and the overnight upload does not always run to the end. A great deal of Newtown's work is done on one machine at the end of that line. Keep a physical copy you can hold, and if the drive has failed, leave it off and post it rather than trust the cloud has the latest.
Is there anywhere in Newtown to drop a drive off?
No. Newtown has no counter, and none waits at the Cardiff office. The lab is in Bristol — the A470 runs you south to the M4, then east over the bridge — a long haul the courier makes on your behalf. A weekday hand-in at the lab is fine if you would rather drive, though tracked, insured post is what most choose.
