The Health Report Said Fine. The Surface Scan Stopped Dead.
A buyer was waiting for the IdeaPad, so this began as a tidy-up before a sale. He ran Lenovo’s built-in diagnostics before wiping anything, and got two results that cannot both be right: the health check says the drive is fine, but the long scan fails on an error every time
. His conclusion made sense — the laptop itself is fine, so the problem has to be the disk
— and he wanted three folders off it, no more.

Why that happens.
SMART is the drive marking its own work. It counts a handful of things and compares them with limits the manufacturer set generously, which is why a disk can be badly worn and still print a pass. The extended test does a different job altogether: it reads the surface end to end and stops at the first place it cannot get through. Both readings can be honest and still point in opposite directions, and it is the gap between them that tells you something. Believe the one that went and touched the platters. Most disks fail with no warning at all. This one had been warning him for months.
What we used on this one.
Every step, in order →| The tools | What it did here | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| ACE Lab PC-3000 Express | Opened the maker’s own logs and defect tables, which SMART hides | Opens the maker's service commands, which a plain ATA link will not pass |
| DeepSpar Disk Imager 4 | Imaged in two runs: the cooperative areas, then the slow band charted | Maps the heads first, works surface by surface, and keeps resets, timeouts and power in hand |
| R-Studio Technician | Extracted his three folders from the image, then opened every file | Reads nearly every file system, and rebuilds arrays you can rely on |
How it went.
Read what sits under the word pass
Underneath the verdict the numbers read worse. Reallocations had climbed month on month across most of a year, a second list of addresses was still awaiting a decision, and one band of platter gave its data up many times more slowly than the surface on either side. Nothing had run out its allowance yet, so the drive kept passing itself. A lot of disks die inside that margin.
Three folders wanted, the entire disk copied
Fetching three folders to order would have set the heads darting back and forth across a surface that is already giving way, since those files were spread over every platter in the drive. A single even sweep from one end to the other asks far less of the mechanics, and the difficult band can wait for a final pass. It also banks everything else while the disk is still willing.
A list of file names is not proof
Out of the finished image came photographs, spreadsheets and letters. Not one was merely counted — every file was opened, because a filename tells you next to nothing about the condition of what sits behind it. The sectors that would not read were also cross-checked against the file table, and none of them fell inside the folders he had asked for.
Signing it off.
The three folders went back to Adamsdown checked over, and a full image of the rest is held here. A new SSD went into the IdeaPad in place of the old disk before it was sold on. That disk had been failing a good deal faster than its own report suggested.
