The Break Missed the Part That Matters.
A year of watching the forecast paid off in one week — two nights, no moon, stars all the way down
— and none of it copied anywhere yet. Then the card jammed in the reader. In Swansea a screwdriver was worked into the slot, and it was the card that gave way, not the reader: a chunk of the case broke away right by the gold contacts

Why that happens.
There is very little card in an SD card. Nearly all of it is moulded plastic wrapped around one small block — controller and memory set in the same lump of resin — and the only link between that block and the gold pads is a set of fine traces running along the corner he levered against. Break that corner and it is almost always the wiring you lose, not the storage. Think of a shop with the shutter jammed shut: the stock is all on the shelves, you just cannot get in at the front. Losing the fragment changed nothing for us. Under magnification a break tells its own story, and this one had run out of energy well before it reached the die.

How it went.
Let the break do the talking
With the missing piece gone for good, the card was the only witness. The stereo microscope gave the answer in a minute: part of the contact block simply absent, traces stopping dead where it had been, and a fracture line that petered out long before the die. Read that, and an alarming-looking card turns into routine chip-level work.
The factory left its own way in
Turn a monolith over and you find a row of service pads. They are there for the factory's own testing, nobody documents them, and every maker lays them out differently — so this one had to be probed until the map made sense. Then wire finer than a hair onto the few pads that count. The memory replied down a route the break had never gone near.
Pages of data, not yet pictures
A chip hands back pages in whatever order its controller kept them, and that is all it hands back. Error correction runs first. The XOR mask has to come off, the pages have to go back into their true sequence, and a filesystem is rebuilt across the lot before one folder name shows up. Closing that gap is the job, and no card reader on earth does it for you.

Every frame from both nights opened and checked out, the calibration files with them. The card itself went in the bin, and he did not give it a second thought.
