At Cardiff Data Recovery, we are Wales’s leading experts in mac fusion drive data recovery. When your MacBook Pro boots only to macOS Utilities or Recovery Mode, it’s often a sign of logical corruption or Fusion Drive disassembly, leaving your data inaccessible.
A recent client came to us after the Apple Genius Bar was unable to recover any data from a 14-inch MacBook Pro that had stopped booting. The system would only load into macOS Recovery, and Disk Utility could no longer mount the internal Fusion Drive. Fortunately, our Apple-certified data engineers were able to recover the full data set through advanced, non-destructive techniques.
🧰 What Is a Fusion Drive?
A Fusion Drive is Apple’s hybrid storage system that combines:
- A high-speed SSD (solid-state drive)
- A traditional HDD (hard disk drive)
The system presents both as a single logical volume group, merging performance with storage capacity. If either drive becomes corrupted or disconnected, the logical volume may break, leading to boot failure and apparent data loss.
🔧 Symptoms of Fusion Drive Failure
- Mac boots only to macOS Utilities or Internet Recovery Mode
- Drive appears missing or greyed out in Disk Utility
- Error messages like “APFS container corrupt” or “Fusion Drive could not be mounted”
- macOS reinstall fails due to missing or unreadable disk
- Data no longer visible, even though storage is still occupied
🛠️ Our Fusion Drive Recovery Process – Step by Step
1. Secure Extraction and Imaging of SSD and HDD
Fusion Drives consist of two physical drives. We start by:
- Opening the MacBook and removing both storage components (if not soldered)
- Where drives are soldered, a full board-level readout is initiated
- Each drive is imaged sector-by-sector using advanced recovery hardware (PC-3000 or DeepSpar)
- ECC logic is applied to stabilise read errors on failing HDD sectors
- SMART diagnostics and temperature logs reviewed to detect hardware degradation
⚠️ We never work on the original drives. All recovery is done from cloned images to ensure no further data loss.
2. Reconstruction of the Logical Volume Group (LVG)
Once both drives are imaged:
- We analyse Fusion metadata to determine the structure of the original CoreStorage or APFS volume group
- Disk UUIDs, volume headers, and container schemes are examined and matched
- If the Fusion link is broken, we re-pair the drives virtually, using identifiers found in the LVM headers
- Logical volumes are reassembled in a virtual environment that emulates Apple’s disk management system
3. Volume Mounting and File System Analysis
With the volume rebuilt:
- We mount the reassembled disk in a controlled macOS-compatible forensic environment
- If the file system (typically APFS or HFS+) is damaged, we repair it using non-destructive tools
- Directory indexes, inodes, catalog files, and journal entries are reconstructed manually if required
- Time Machine snapshots and user data (Documents, Desktop, Photos, etc.) are recovered in full hierarchy
4. Data Extraction and Verification
Recovered data is:
- Extracted to a clean, encrypted external drive
- Verified for integrity using checksums, test opens, and folder depth analysis
- Checked with the client to confirm successful restoration of important files such as:
- Photos and videos
- Business documents and spreadsheets
- iCloud-linked data
- Installed applications and user preferences (when recoverable)
💻 Supported Mac Devices & Fusion Configurations
We recover Fusion Drives from:
- MacBook Pro 13” / 14” / 15” (Intel and Apple Silicon)
- iMac 21.5” and 27” models with Fusion storage
- Mac Mini Fusion configurations
